An album cover

I've always liked Jars of Clay pretty well... Really liked their first record when it came out and thought it was cool that secular radio played "Flood" all the time. Over the next few records, I kind of lost interest... then a couple of records ago, I started to listen again. "Who we are Instead" was a really good record, but still not enough to vault these guys to favorite status.

Well... now they've released "Good Monsters" and let me just say... this record completely blew me away... it is fantastic... start to finish. If you want to go to itunes or napster and listen to some of it to get an idea, may I suggest for a rocker the song "Work" which is fantastic and then, the real "moment" of the record is the song "Oh My God". Listen to this one with the lights out and at a time when you can pay attention and listen to it a couple of times in a row... amazing song. Great record... check it out.

Finally on Itunes!

After waiting for almost a YEAR, my CD "Lower than the Angels" is finally available on Itunes. You can download it by the song for $.99 or the whole album for $9.99. That's $3 cheaper than I sell it for on my website... but, you don't get the sweet artwork so I guess it's a wash.

In other news, I'm doing fantasy football this year... my team is sitting at 1-1 right now after a blowout loss in week one and a narrow one point victory in week 2 (who's standing on the desk now Mark?) It's an 8 team league and everyone's team is loaded with stars... Each week is pretty much a crapshoot as to who is going to win. This week I think I have a pretty decent shot to win so I'll probably get stomped.

Things at the new job are still going really great. I led worship this past Sunday for the first time in two months which was really nice. The band I played with was awesome... piano, drums, acoustic (me), really good acoustic (Jim), upright bass (plucked and bowed), and my friend Adam played mandolin, pennywhistle, and accordion. I'm telling you right now... churches need more accordion. Good stuff! I'm hoping to get to lead about 4 or 5 times a year... that should be just about right. I'm really enjoying being off stage and working on lighting, sound, video, graphic design, etc. It's so much fun to have a blank canvas each week to work with. I hope to start being able to share some of our work on this site in the near future but so far, I've been relying on pre-fab worship video type stuff while we're putting together our video setup. We still don't have a camera and a few other things we'll need to start doing our own video work. Look for that in the near future...

I'll try to be better about updating this thing... sorry it's been a week. Time gets away from me.

MP3 Vault

I just posted 5 new recordings to my MP3 Vault over on gregadkinsmusic.com. Feel free to check them out. The songs are: The Ballad of Beverly Brown, Back it Up, One Finger Blues, Come Lord Jesus, and Pray Where You Are.

If you are used to hearing the recording quality from my 52 songs project in my demos, prepare to be disappointed... that setup is no more so these recordings are not quite up to par. I just set up some microphones in the sanctuary at church and turned it loose... didn't have time to worry much about the sound. Sorry about that but hey, what do you want for free? Anyway, sorry to blur the lines between my new sites, but I wanted to let folks know that I had some new song demos available for download... kind of a continuation of the 52 songs project. After writing those 52 songs in one year, it's taken me almost 3 years to write the next 52 songs but I just finished the 104th song this past week (Back it Up). I guess at this pace, it will take me 6 years to write 52 more.

Just an opinion...

...but I want to be on record as having said it. The new clock rules in college football absolutely suck. Shortening the game by a few minutes is one thing... this is shortening games by an average of 2 series per team, per game and in many games even more than that. In Tennessee's game Saturday night, we had the ball six times THE WHOLE GAME. That's absolutely ridiculous. The rules need to be changed back.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Want to win $500?

Well, if you're at all skilled in graphic design, you may be interested in this. My friend Mark Nelson is planting a new church here in Knoxville. After much debate, (and after ignoring my amazing suggestion of "Peyton's Summit Church") they have chosen the name "Crossings". This is a much better choice than the second place name of "The Mark Nelson Holiness Tabernacle of Faith". That was too wordy.

Anyway... Crossings needs a logo. They are accepting submissions for the next few weeks and the winning entry will receive $500.00 cash. A couple of guidelines... even though the word is Crossings, don't make it crosses. Also, they want something simple... think of Apple computer and how they do their design. They want something designed with that mindset.

Also, there is a paragraph of legalese... Here it is:

JPGs and PDFs (no larger than 1M please) will be accepted for initial concepts, but winning logo will need to be submitted in EPS vector file format which permits usage of elements separately. Submissions must include both color and black and white versions. $500 award will be paid directly to the selected artist, upon which time Crossings will own unlimited usage rights ad infinitum. Award will be paid after delivery of final artwork on CD and usability of said artwork has been confirmed. Any similarity between selected design and other submitted designs is coincidental; only the winning artist will be paid for their submission, regardless of how similar another artist's submission may be. By submitting a design, the submitter agrees to these stipulations in their entirety.

If you're interested in entering, you have until October 1st. Good luck!

Powell Church Announcement Loop

From time to time, I try to show you guys a little of what I actually spend my days doing (and it's not just surfing for cool websites!) This past week, I finally got our pre-service announcement loop up and running. Eventually, It will be a 10 minute non-repeating loop... it takes a few weeks to build up a nice set of different things to include so this first crack at it was only 3 and a half minutes, but I think it will show you pretty well what we're doing with pre-service announcements.

People always want to know how this stuff gets made. I can tell you that I did everything you see with Final Cut Pro, Apple Motion 2, Adobe Photoshop CS2, and some stock animations from Digital Juice.

My Monday Morning Must Read Website

Every Monday, I can't wait to surf on over to Post Secret and see the latest batch of postcards. It's one of the most fascinating websites I've ever seen.

If you haven't been there, I'll briefly tell you about it... it started as an art project... it has turned into a phenomenon. A guy asked people to put their darkest secrets on postcards and send them to him. He puts them on the internet. The things people say are amazing... I warn you now, some of them are shocking, some of them are horrifying, some of them will make you turn your head, and some of them will make you want to cry. I think what draws me to it is the raw realness to be found in these confessions... even if it's anonymous, at least it's true with no masks... and that is harder and harder to find.

New City is back!

People keep asking me "What is up with New City... are they closed or just open sometimes or what?" Well, I'm glad to tell you that at least for this fall, New City is going to be rocking once again. Here's the deal. We used to be open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night and there was always music. Now, we are open only when there is an event. The good news is, this fall, there are TONS of events! Here is a list of everyone coming to play this fall: Andrew Peterson, Jill Phillips, Derek Webb, Sandra McCracken, Matthew Perryman Jones, Bill Wolf, Standing Small, Andy Davis, The Myriad, Cool Hand Luke, Ryan Long, and Ed Cash. It's going to be a GREAT few months and if you're in the area (or even if you're not), you need to make it out to some shows!

Free Derek Webb!

Starting today, you can download Derek Webb's great CD "Mockingbird" for free. Go to FreeDerekWebb.com and you can download it for free. It's pretty cool... it's not streaming or encoded... it's totally free to where you can burn it, put it on your ipod, whatever you want! If you don't have this record, you should get it... it has some great songs on it and Derek hits some topics that pretty much nobody else in Christian music is talking about.
