A brand new Record... A brand new Website...

Well, the record I've been working on all summer is finished and finally about ready to release! It's called "Lower than the Angels" and will be available on Tuesday, October 25th. For those of you who followed my 52 songs in 52 weeks project, you'll recognize many of the songs, but there are a couple of new ones as well. The songs you do recognize have all changed, some of them quite drastically.

The record was produced this summer in Nashville by a guy named Andrew Osenga. He really did a fantastic job both with production and playing most of the guitars on the record. You may know Andrew as a guitarist / vocalist / songwriter for Caedmon's Call but he also has a couple of really great solo records out. You can find out more about Andrew on his website.

The record features some really talented musicians that I was really honored to have the opportunity to work with... they literally gave these songs new life. A guy named Paul Eckberg did all the drumming. Paul plays live with lots of people and I was primarily familiar with his work playing for Michael Card. He's currently on tour with Andrew Peterson. Aaron Sands did all the bass work, both electric and upright. Aaron primarily plays with Jars of Clay. A guy named Marcus Myers played fiddle on a couple of tracks and really did an awesome job... Marcus plays with a great band called Silers Bald. The wonderful Ben Shive came by for a whole day and played some piano on a couple of songs and B-3 on another. His parts are some of my favorites on the record. Kenny Hutson, formerly of one of my all time favorite bands, Vigilantes of Love, came in and played pedal steel on two tracks and mandolin on another. Finally, several people stopped in to contribute some guest vocals on the record. Andrew Peterson was kind enough to come sing lead on a verse of "Rock of Ages" and also add some harmonies. Andrew is a wonderful writer, and you should go buy all of his CDs and then come back and thank me later. Start with either "Love and Thunder" or "Behold the Lamb of God". Seriously. On the song "Heavenly Descent", we had a little choir going (which Ben dubbed "The O.K. Chorale") which included Andrew Osenga, Ben Shive, Randall Goodgame, Chris Mason, Arthur Alligood, and Andrew Peterson. Finally, Allison Osenga came down to the basement and let me hold their sweet little baby girl while she sang some fantastic harmonies on "Come Lord Jesus".

The track listing for the record is:
1. Heavenly Descent
2. On the Edge
3. Come Lord Jesus (not another worship song)
4. The Black Keys
5. Romantic Comedy
6. Are you out there Tonight
7. I See a lot of you in me
8. Connor's lullaby
9. Tattered old notebook
10. Be the body
11. Rock of Ages
12. Talkin' Church of the Future Blues (hidden track... new version!)

Anyway, with the release of the record, I've decided to start a new website, just for my music. The myspace site is cool and all but it doesn't do what I need. Anyway, to check out my new site, which for now is pretty simple, visit www.gregadkinsmusic.com. If you would like to order the record, you can go to the store section of the site and purchase it. It's $13.00 which includes shipping. You can order now if you like, but I won't be shipping until right around Oct. 25th... actually, if you pre-order, you'll probably get yours a few days before that. I pick them up from the printer in Nashville next week sometime.

Well, as you can see, I'm really excited about the new record and new website. I just had an absolute blast making the record and the whole process has been fantastic. I've got some great memories and some great stories. I am booking concerts for the fall and spring now... I would love to come to your area and do a show at your church or at a local venue (coffeehouse, cafe, etc). If you're interested in having me in, please Send me an email.

What actually Happened

Sorry I haven't been able to update... it's been an insane couple of weeks. Anyway, we never ended up having any evacuees here at the church. Knoxville ended up getting a lot less folks than some other cities did. A large shelter was set up at the Knoxville Coliseum and I've been working as the church volunteer coordinator. It's been really great to see so many people willing to step up and volunteer lots and lots of time.

Thanks for all of your prayers...

In other news... this morning in the "spam" folder of my inbox was an email with the subject line: "Sending you a Fun Hurricane E-Hug". Um... that's just wrong.

Church and things are going really great right now. In our "pomo" service (The Well), we're doing a series on Colossians that I'm really excited about. We're calling it Colossians remixed. Last night we talked about the Jewish world and the Gentile world colliding and how there were a lot of similarities to their cultural situation back then to ours today. Funny how that book always seems to just apply... I put together a video called "Colissions" to set up the theme of worlds colliding that I though came out really good. I'll try to post it in the next couple of days for you guys... I know it's been awhile since I've put any new videos up around here.

We can't go to them... but they can come to us...

I found out tonight that for at least the next week, my church is going to be hosting around 150 refugees from New Orleans. We are completely unprepared... we have a gym and a large foyer and an industrial kitchen... and 4 showers. It's going to take every single person doing something to make it work... and even then, I'm not sure how we're going to do it... But... I'm so glad we're in a position to be able to help. I know this coming week is going to be really hard and I have absolutely no idea what to expect. We don't know who the folks are who are coming or where they're from or what they've been through... I'll keep you folks posted... hopefully with some pictures and stories. Keep us in your prayers... that God will work through us this week and beyond if need be. We expect them to arrive sometime on Monday... there are 25,000 refugees coming to Knoxville all together... many of the area churches are going to be helping out with this as well.
