I am trying to be the best husband to Jessica and father to Connor I can possibly be. In the daytime (and after they go to sleep) I am the Innovative Creative Arts Pastor at Powell Church in Knoxville, TN. I love songwriting, creating stupid videos, apple computers, and pie.

Anybody live in Nashville?

I need a place to crash a few times this summer in Nashville... I really can't afford a hotel and would prefer if somebody had a couch I could sleep on. I'm a nice guest... I won't eat your food or frighten your family... I don't think I know of any of you who are in Nashville but if anyone's lurking out there who wouldn't mind giving a traveler a place to sleep, I'd sure appreciate it.

The changes I was talking about...

So those changes I mentioned a couple of weeks ago... here they are. I know this blog over the last year or so has turned into more of a music / songwriting blog than an emerging church / ministry blog. I've been thinking for awhile about starting a new site for my music stuff to keep it separate from this. So, I've decided to do that now. If you want to read about church stuff, you'll find it here. If you want to read about my music, you'll find it over at www.myspace.com/gregadkins. Hope you'll check it out.

The other reason I've decided to do this now is that I am finally going to make a "real" record. The demos I've been recording here at home have served their purpose... to be demos, but they're not good enough to really do much with. I'm really proud of them for being recorded in my house with two microphones, but realistically, they still sound like I recorded them in my house with two microphones.

And so, starting in June, I'll begin traveling to Nashville to make a record. Hopes are it will be done in September or October. I'm really excited about who I'm going to be working with... I didn't want to just rent studio time. I wanted to find a producer who liked my music and believed in the project. Anyway... not to say too much about it here, but feel free to surf on over to the new site to find out more.

In the next couple of days, I'll be replacing most of the 52 songs with 30 second samples instead of the full MP3s... I've loved being able to share my music with you all for the past year, but realistically, if I want to sell CDs at some point, I probably need to not give all my music away anymore. I hope that isn't seen as selling out... that's not the intention at all.

Anyway, from here on out, I'll keep this site mostly to matters of faith and ministry. Enjoy.

The Last Word and the Word After That...

Is anyone else reading McLaren's newest book, the third book in the New Kind of Christian trilogy? It is something else... thought provoking, confusing, brilliant in places. We're reading it right now in our Tuesday morning book group and man, it's raising all kinds of interesting questions.

For those who have never read it, the book primarily deals with the topic of hell. Think of every hard question you've ever had about hell (ie: could a loving God send anyone to eternal torment, is hell really real, is hell really eternal, etc) and this book attempts to deal with those questions. It's pretty controversial, but in a really good way. It doesn't seem to try to be getting me to come to any one conclusion. Instead, it is just asking questions I've never asked and forcing me to come to my own conclusions. What I like best about it is that McLaren really tries to base the discussion around scripture... there are a lot of tools in this book to do a great Bible study on the topic of hell... something that's been lacking in his previous books.

Anyway, if you're interested in reading something that will really get your wheels spinning, this would be a great book to read. Check it out.

Life without Email...

Is it just me or is anyone else having email trouble today? My work email is down and AOL is even acting weird... I'm not getting mail through it and AOL's mail is usually fairly reliable. Strange.

One of my co-workers just came in and jokingly asked if I could live without email. Now here is where I would like to give you a beautiful piece of writing about how spending this day without email has reminded me of a simpler time when co-workers didn't email back and forth, we actually spoke face to face. I wish I could tell you that today made me want to also watch less television and take up bird-watching. But unfortunately, I can tell you no such thing, because not having email totally sucks. Somebody fix the flippin internet already! Gosh!

If you don't have plans on Saturday...

Come check out my show at New City Cafe. I'll have a five piece band and will debuting a bunch of new material as well as playing some of my older stuff. Should be fun. Show starts at 8:00 and tickets are $6.00 at the door with half of that supporting my church youth group's mission trip to Vancouver.

Changes come... turn my world around

To quote a great song by over the rhine... changes come. I'm about to take a slightly different direction in how I handle my music and songwriting in relation to this blog. If you have been thinking about or meaning to download any of my 52 songs in 52 weeks you should do it within the next week or so. After that, they will probably be either taken down or replaced with thirty second samples.

I've got a new project in the works that I can't really talk about just yet but I'll let everyone know about it as soon as I can. It's something I'm really excited about and should mark the beginning of a new chapter of sorts for me.

Oh, and the offer to test out I-chat still stands. Surely ONE PERSON out there has I-chat and would be willing to help me test it out. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I-Chat anyone?

Hey, I just figured out that I have the capabilities to do I-chat on my new Mac at work. If anyone out there has I-chat and wants to help me test it out, send me an email... I could do it anytime Monday or Tuesday during the day.
