I am trying to be the best husband to Jessica and father to Connor I can possibly be. In the daytime (and after they go to sleep) I am the Innovative Creative Arts Pastor at Powell Church in Knoxville, TN. I love songwriting, creating stupid videos, apple computers, and pie.

New Songs!!!

I've finally added some new music to my "52 songs" page... it's actually up to 60 songs now so maybe I need to change that title. Anyway, the new songs are:

#53 - Interstate Lines - a holdover from the 52 songs project... not my best but okay.
#54 - COVER - Arise my Soul, Arise - A cool hymn reworked with a rockin' band.
#55 - Jessica's Lullaby - solo piano... quiet.
#56 - Baptism Song - what I wish people had told me when I got baptized
#57 - December - my first stab at a Christmas song
#58 - Talkin' Hardees Monster Thick Burger Blues - as ridiculous as it sounds.
#59 - The Bush Leagues - not about politics
#60 - Tear Blinded Eyes - the final holdover from 52 songs project... okay.

I plan to put more songs up as I write them, although I'm taking a much more minimalist approach to recording them now... trying to keep it simple with just guitar and vocals or piano and vocals. Anyway, there's 8 new songs and I hope you enjoy them! Feel free to listen, download, burn, share, comment, whatever!

Unbelievable...

Tomorrow is my five year anniversary... wow! I'm amazed that anyone would put with me for so long but my wife is no ordinary woman.

Here is where I write something specifically for my wife:

I don't normally post a lot of family stuff on the site here but in the off-chance that you read this sweetie, I want you to know that I'm not ashamed to say how much I love you in front of the whole world. I am humbled and lucky to get to spend my life with such a wonderful wife, mother, and friend. You still take my breath away.

Altogether now... AWWWWWWWWWW... Seriously though, an anniversary is a big deal when you think about it. My grandparents are getting ready to celebrate their 60th in April... in this day and age, that's downright inspiring.

The Don and Emily Saliers book is interesting. Emily is one half of The Indigo Girls and has always been one of my favorite songwriters. Her dad is a worship leader and college professor at Emory in Atlanta. They write this book together... it's thoughts on music as it intertwines with their faith. Very interesting and in places, quite profound. In other places, it reads like musicians writing a book (that's not a good thing) but they still have something to say.

I read Ivan Denisovich on the recommendation of a friend and liked it more than I thought I would.

An Hour on Sunday is written by one of the pastors at Willow Creek. The main thing I took from this book is the idea that as a worship leader / service planner, I only get 52 chances a year to impact people through the power of a service. Obviously, there are lots of other places to minister to folks through small groups, fellowship, conversation... just doing life together. But this book is about reclaiming that hour on Sunday to inspire people through use of creativity and the arts. It comes from somewhat of a modern mindset which is to be expected from a megachurch like Willow Creek, but there is a lot of good stuff here. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Excavating Jesus and The Gospel according to Moses I'm reading because they were on a reading list put out by Rob Bell of Mars Hill church in Grand Rapids. I listen to his sermons online each week and am fascinated by the Jewish history he is always talking about. He recommended these two books (as well as several others) as a good starting point to pique my interest. He's right. My interest is piqued. I think I'll say that word again. Pique. Fun.

The Screwtape letters I had read before in college... we're currently reading it for our Tuesday morning book club (Eyes Wide Open) and man, this is a great book for a discussion group. Every chapter is really short (two-three pages) but each one asks a few really big questions. We've only been getting through about 2 chapters a week because the conversation has been so great.

Enough about me... what are you reading?
