I am trying to be the best husband to Jessica and father to Connor I can possibly be. In the daytime (and after they go to sleep) I am the Innovative Creative Arts Pastor at Powell Church in Knoxville, TN. I love songwriting, creating stupid videos, apple computers, and pie.

I don't think anybody's listening but...

Songs #10 and #11 are both online. Click on "52 songs in 52 weeks" to listen to them... if you want.

Not to have a pity party, but seeing as how the only comment left on that page in the last 3 weeks has been from Jeph, I'm contemplating abandoning the project as it seems no one is listening... that's fine. I realize folks don't come here to listen to me sing... they come here for resources and conversation...

I've been slacking a bit on saying anything much worthwhile and that's partly because I've been using time I usually do for that to write and record songs. Perhaps I should get back to basics...

happy thanksgiving

go be with your families and even though it feels cheesy and even though it feels cliche, sit down and tell God what you're thankful for... I think He likes to hear us say it, even if he knows already.

hack! hack!

Say a prayer for my family... my wife has been really sick the last few days with a chest cold that won't quit... now I'm getting it and it's NOT a good time for me to be sick. Sunday I have to lead 3 worship services and direct a children's christmas play rehearsal that wears me out when I'm well... sick I don't even want to think about. Being sick totally sucks. When I was a kid I kind of liked it because I could miss school.... I don't feel that way anymore... is that because I like my job a lot more than I liked school or is it because when you get older being sick hurts more? A mystery.

And as a side note, my blog needs more graphics. Some bloggers have a graphic for every entry... I think I'm too lazy for that. Maybe someday.

Great Googley-Moogley part 2

Someone found my site today by searching for "adult men wetting themselves in diapers."

Beautiful.

Actually, if you want to see a funny google thing, go there, then type in "weapons of mass destruction" and hit "I'm feeling lucky". Or, type in "french military victories" and hit "i'm feeling lucky". Both produce funny results.

The Well

The worship service I help with has been amazing this year and I wanted to just share some thoughts regarding this year compared to last year.

The word Community just keeps slamming me this year and I have learned so much in the past 4 months about how when it comes to bringing people into worship, the more people you can have on a level ground, the better off you are. Example... last year, there were pretty much two of us who ran the show... we made the decisions, brainstormed what we would do, came up with all of the ideas, and made sure they happened. Then we asked other people to help us make those things happen and they would and everything went great. Except, people only got our perspectives, we got burned out, and no one else had any sense of feeling needed for anything other than following orders.

Praise God we saw this as a problem and this year started Deeper Waters which is our planning team... we've got about 10 who meet every week and they have taught me so much about how putting together services might look in the future. God worked it out to where the people who were interested in doing this have amazingly complementary gifts... we have Nolan who loves to hang out backstage and pray for people but who also is gifted with drama, poetry, and finding truth in films... we have Alissa who writes custom scripts for services that blow everyone away... we have Jared who is gifted in storytelling and is also a true servant... we have Josh who thinks deeply and is an amazing encourager... we have Lindsey who runs the sound board and is gifted in all areas of worship leading... we have Jessica who sings, writes, plays guitar, bass, acts, and makes everyone laugh... we have Mandy who is full of creative ideas and shares them with refreshing passion... we have Daniel who always sees things from the flip side and makes us take a needed new perspective... we have Betsy who plays the drums and loves to help us plan even though she goes to the high school service because she has a heart for teenagers... we have Reggie who is an elder in our church and double our age but believes in what we are doing and has a big heart for the lost... and finally we have me and I just try to keep up with all of these amazing people.

It's a small example, but it is the body and it is beautiful.

Funny quote...

Heard this on "King of the Hill". Hank was talking to a Christian rocker and said this:

"You're not making Christianity better... you're making rock and roll worse."

hilarious.

Life underwater

The past two weeks I've just absolutely been underwater. We are moving and the process of selling our house and buying a new one is exhausting... necessary and exciting but also exhausting.

Also, just an observation... when other people are pregnant, it seems like no time at all and the baby is there... when it's you or your spouse pregnant, it seems like ETERNITY. It seems like she has been pregnant forever!

I plan to see the new matrix film on Monday or Tuesday... hopefully people will still want to talk about it but general consensus I'm hearing is that the second two movies do not live up to the promise of the first, intellectually at least. We'll see.

The Moral of the Story

If you have been listening to Ragamuffin Minister's continuing tales of embarassment, you've probably been amazed at the wisdom contained therein. If you haven't, head on over there now and listen. Great stuff.

In tribute to Jeph's words of wisdom, I have crafted a little song in tribute... Enjoy.

Songs Six and Seven are now online

Songs number six and seven are now available on my "52 songs in 52 weeks" project. Song six is a song I wrote on my birthday called "the year" and song seven is a cover of Dougie McLean's "Ready for the Storm". Enjoy and critique!

Also, my appreciation to the Ragamuffin Minister who is grading each song with a letter grade. So far I have scored an A, a B-, an A-, a C, a B-, and another B-... that's a 2.83 songwriting GPA... I'm going to have to work hard to get that B average. My parents said if I didn't get at least a B average, my allowance would be taken away and I could kiss that scholarship goodbye! They don't understand that Mr. Muffin is a really hard teacher and you really have to EARN an A in his class. I'm gonna keep working at it though!
